Along my journey in the Family of Medicine, I’ve been asked many times: “What is the medical alliance and what does it do?” Sometimes, we may wonder if we really make an impact in our communities. And whether we should keep joining year after year. I encourage you to take a moment and imagine what your life and community would look like if there were no TMA Alliance.
There would be no First Tuesdays at the Capitol where we work together with TMA to protect patient care and the practice of medicine, no Texas BookShare to give thousands of books to underserved children, and no Hard Hats for Little Heads to give bike helmets to protect kids’ heads. No enriching students’ lives with allied health, nursing, and medical school scholarships, and no ALLMED or regional conferences to learn, grow, and have fun together.
Would you have met the amazing people who have become lifelong friends if your local alliance did not exist?
I have experienced the magic of being a Smith County Medical Society Alliance member for 25 years! Together, we play hard, work hard, laugh together, and cry together. This magic – this special connection we have as spouses of physicians – is what keeps me coming back year after year.
I am proud of the impact the alliance has had across the state and locally in our communities. I’m excited to renew my membership for another year.
We kicked off the 2026 renewal campaign with our wonderful Connect Over Coffee events. Now, we’re asking everyone to renew their membership in October so we can spend the rest of our year making new friends and growing together in the Family of Medicine.
If you haven’t already done so, please join me in renewing your membership today, while we celebrate being TMA Alliance Proud–Texas Strong!
TMAA Fall Gathering: A Rosy Affair
Connecting with the statewide alliance community, serving the Family of Medicine, and hearing how to engage and grow your local membership. You’ll find them all at the TMAA Fall Gathering on Oct. 24-25 in Tyler. If you haven’t registered, you still have time. And if you haven’t attended a statewide event before, this is a perfect opportunity, especially if you live within driving distance of Tyler. Bring a friend and come experience what TMAA is all about!
Alliance members will gather to create care baskets to share with local residency programs across Texas and connect through a variety of social events. And don’t miss keynote speaker Holly Hull Miori, PhD, share from her research about the role millennials can and should play in your nonprofits – and how to engage them – as donors, board members, and volunteers.
Check out details on the TMAA website and register today. You also need to register for the TMA’s concurrent Local Medicine Matters event (free to TMAA members) so you’ll be included in breakfast and lunch counts on Saturday. Register for TMA Local Medicine Matters.
Renew Now for 2026 You should have received an email this week asking you to renew your combined local and TMA alliance membership for 2026. Clicking the link in that email is the easiest way to renew because it takes you directly into your account.
As Joi mentioned in her column, the alliance is concentrating its renewal drive in October to free up time for other meaningful activities the rest of the year. If you’ve already renewed, thank you. Your renewal can help your alliance earn a $500 bonus from TMAA for renewing 95% of members for another year of membership.
And if you haven’t renewed yet, do so soon and consider making it easier in subsequent years by checking the Automated Dues Renewal box on the renewal form. Don’t miss out on all your local alliance and TMAA offer in 2026!
Things to note:
If you participate in autorenewal, you should already have received an email. Credit cards were run Oct. 2. If payment didn’t go through (e.g., the card on file expired or was compromised), charges will automatically run again on Nov. 2 so make sure TMAA has current credit card information.
When you renew, take a moment to check your contact information in your TMAA profile. Be sure we have your email address so you keep up with alliance news through the TMAA Monthly Memo.
The opportunity to donate to the TMA Foundation, the charitable arm of TMA, is included on your dues statement this year. The suggested donation is $48; you’re welcome to customize it to another amount. If you’re on autorenewal and would like to make a donation to TMAF, you can do that here.
Apply for Medical Community Grants
Local alliances can apply for a medical community grant from the TMA Foundation until Nov. 15. Matching grants of up to $7,500 are available for local health improvement and education projects, with funds awarded in February 2026. The Travis alliance received a grant in 2025 for a program aimed at improving asthma outcomes for uninsured children in Travis County. Log in to the TMAF Grant Portal to start the two-step process, beginning with a Letter of Inquiry.
