Our TMA Alliance will soon celebrate 107 years of service to the Texas Family of Medicine … what an accomplishment! Undoubtedly, the women who founded our organization as the TMA Women’s Auxiliary would be amazed at all we are today: a robust organization of women and men involved in just about every aspect of keeping Texas healthier. We support our own medical community, and we better the communities we live in through outreach endeavors and legislative advocacy.
The world our organization began in has certainly changed and so has the practice of medicine. Despite those changes, we continue
to grow and adapt, keeping our focus and dedication to the organization’s mission. With that in mind, I shared this quote from Socrates with the TMAA Board of Directors when we met last month: “The secret to change and growth is not to focus all your energy on fighting the old, but on building the new.” It seemed a perfect reflection to the work we began in September at our board orientation and future planning meetings.
To begin, the board took a comprehensive and critical look at how we are succeeding as an alliance and where we have room to improve and grow. This analysis provided the groundwork for the Future Planning Committee to formulate TMAA’s first-ever, three-year strategic plan with an updated mission and vision statement, which the board adopted in October.
This is the foundation to ensure our alliance thrives in the present and paves the way for a successful and impactful future. Want to hear more about how we are looking forward and the work we’ve done? Join us for the next local alliance leadership call at noon on Nov. 19; all members are welcome. Your local president can share the link.
The Power of One: Renew Your TMAA Membership The Power of One can have a multiplier effect. With each one member who joins or renews their membership, TMAA becomes one stronger, dynamic organization. And our Plus 1 membership campaign emphasizes the impact each member can have by recruiting someone new to the alliance or bringing back a member who stepped away for a time. You are the organization’s best ambassador!
Keep welcoming others to TMAA. And if you haven’t renewed your 2025 membership, take a few minutes to do so today:
Go to the TMAA website and click “renew” or follow the link from the email you received in October. And when you renew, consider signing up for auto renewal so you don’t have to remember to renew each year.
Call the TMA Knowledge Center at (800) 880-7955 with credit card information. Knowledge Center representatives also can update any changes to your phone number, address, or email.
Return the application form you received in the mail in October, along with your check.
Tune in to the Enrichment Series
You still have time to register for the TMA Alliance Enrichment Series sessions in November and December – open to all members as a benefit of membership. RSVP to receive the Zoom link. Be sure to indicate if you’re attending one or both sessions:
Thrive Through Transitions on Nov. 12 from 7 pm-8:30 pm can help you navigate significant life transitions – a new role, a new season of parenting, empty-nesting, caregiving, retirement, or just a shift in your routine.
Doreen Steenland, RN, a Mindful Leadership Coach and med spouse, will lead this interactive, experiential workshop to equip you with the tools, mindset, and strategies to confidently embrace change and uncertainty. During the session, you’ll prioritize what’s important to you, look at challenges through a new lens, and create an action plan to thrive.
89th Legislative Update: Wins and What’s on the Horizon on Dec. 5 from noon-1 pm will focus on how state and federal advocacy impacts the practice of medicine and physicians’ ability to care for patients. Clayton Stewart, TMA Vice President of Public Affairs and Chief Lobbyist, will give an in-depth look at what TMA has done at the state and federal capitols to protect the profession of medicine on 10-plus critical legislative issues such as protecting physician autonomy, stopping scope expansions, and reducing health insurance interference – and what’s ahead for 2025.
Holiday Sharing Card Gift Supports BookShare
The TMAA Holiday Sharing Card, now in its 30th year, is a long-standing tradition of giving that benefits Texans. This year, your donation can help promote literacy by supporting the Texas BookShare program, which has provided more than 13,000 books to children across Texas since 2021. Texas BookShare, funded by the TMA Foundation, aims to encourage parents and kids to read together, with an emphasis on healthy habits.
